New feature live: How to write dynamic text and sentences in Looker Studio?
Looking for dynamic text in Looker Studio? Search no more, this is how we do it. Everybody, yeah yeah!
Google’s Looker Studio team have been very nice to us lately. After the responsive dashboards that went live a few days ago, they’ve got a new feature live: how to write dynamic text and sentences in Looker Studio? We used to have a sneaky way of doing so, but it’s outdated.
So now, let’s review how this new one works :)
Looker Studio connectors we use on a daily basis and are happy with (w/ free trials): Supermetrics - Windsor - Catchr - PMA - Funnel
Not sure which one to pick? Reviews here and there. Still unsure?! Contact us with your tech stack and budget, and we’ll guide you in the right direction:
The power of the @
In the past, building dynamic text/sentences was very hard. We had a workaround, but it was bulky, limited and time consuming. Since then, Google treated us with a nice new feature. First, please create a new text box and start typing whatever you want, and type the @ character, and this is what happens:
A menu magically opens! Choose to Add a variable.
Now, you just have to recreate the base date you’ll be looking into, ie:
Select the data source where your dynamic dimension/metric will come from
Select the dimension and metrics
Sort the way you want it to be sorted
Choose timeframe
Add filters
Once this is done, just name your variable, format it, and explain to Looker Studio what you want. Here, I want the top 1 number of clicks on a given query in the US for the timeframe considered. Show it in red on a transparent background. As you can see, it lets you personalize a lot, we could select top2 , bottom3, …:
Save, and that’s all folks, you’ve got a dynamic variable in a sentence. You’re very welcome (and thanks to the team!).
